The mentored hunting permit, also known by the apprentice license, allows hunters to hunt even before they've completed hunter instruction. This license requires students to be under direct supervision of mentors who have completed hunter education. This type of license was developed to attract hunters of all ages into the hunt sport. This type of license is available in 33 states. Two states have even reduced the minimum age for hunting to attract more young hunters.

Mentored youth hunting license

A Mentored Youth hunting license allows a youth hunt with an adult mentor. The youth can hunt many game species including turkeys, squirrels, bobwhitequail, rabbit, and deer. The license has a limit on how many animals they can carry, so that only a limited number of these species can be taken per day. There are other restrictions, such as the types and types of hunting they may do, the animals they are allowed to take, and the daily and seasonal limits for each species.

The CSF began to monitor the issue in 2006, during the legislative session. There are several requirements for this type of license, including that the hunter be at least 16 years old, but there is room for relaxation. In addition, the minimum age requirements for this license should be at least three years, as recruiting new hunters can be a lengthy process.

Minnesota youths aged 10-13 years old can apply for an apprenticeship hunting license. Adults must accompany apprentice hunters on trips. Mentors must be at the least 21 years. Apprentice hunters can hunt small game with the youth sportsman's license. However, they cannot hunt larger game.
